Ryonosuke Fukui (1923–1986) is celebrated for oil paintings that unite delicate craftsmanship with a strong meditation on transience. His work, forged in the crucible of wartime and postwar Japan, achieves a crystalline realism—a shallow yet deeply resonant spatial field where subjects, from maiko to snowscapes, are imbued with a quiet, enduring poignancy.
This retrospective at I.F. Gallery presents nine key works from Fukui’s mature period (1967–1986), a phase defined after his transformative 1966 travels through Europe. Inspired by Western technique yet rooted in a Japanese sensibility, he pursued a new kind of Japanese painting—one that could distill an essential spirit of Japan within the frameworks of modern design and medium.
Fukui’s art echoes the evolving identity of postwar Japan, masterfully blending traditional aesthetics with contemporary vision. At its heart lies the concept of “mono no aware”: a tender awareness of life’s fragility. As the artist himself reflected, “There is nothing eternal in this world. Everything that has a form will eventually return to the earth. What I wanted to paint was not form, but the earth and space to which form returns.”
We invite visitors to enter Fukui’s contemplative world—to dwell in the delicate brushwork, the subdued palette, and the resonant silence between objects and emptiness.
