EXHIBITION INFO

introduction

All over the world, summer arrives like a dazzling dream. Under the intensity of the sun, colours turn more brilliant, shapes more sharp, sensations more stark. The world transforms into a more vivid vision of itself.

Culturally, summer is tied to abundance — abundant energy, zest, play, rest; all things effervescent. In this sun-shaped time, countless memories are formed. Bright long days. Hot hazy afternoons. Popsicle-sticky hands. Streets flooded by blinding sunlight. Woods buzzing with life. A bite of watermelon, bursting into sweet juice. The relief of iced drinks, paper fans, pool water and ocean foam.

In Japan, summer is closely linked to natsuyasumi, the summer holiday. This event is associated with freedom, friendships, festivals — and, for many, a nostalgia for fleeting respite. Some natsuyasumi staples include the summer festival, enjoying shaved ice, and playing with fireworks. Even in equatorial Singapore, where summer weather extends throughout the year, June stands out as a month of school holidays. This period is anticipated by children, parents, and teachers alike, as a time to travel, rest, or otherwise break away from banality.

In these rare intervals, structure itself seems to melt in the sun. Many children and families leap into play, trading workwear and uniforms for swimsuits and sunglasses. Countless meaningful moments emerge among the vacations and staycations, shaved ice and fireworks, pool parties and summer festivals — and from the simple sharing of quality time with loved ones.

Although summers draw to a close and holidays invariably end, these bright, playful times are not easily forgotten. In their wake, warm memories remain that only grow more brilliant with time, abstracting gradually into radiant nostalgia. Through the act of remembering, the light and lightness of summer can be infinitely extended. Everybody carries their own summer within them, built up piece by piece, memory by memory, rendered vibrant by remembrance.

Dazzled Summer: 夏休み is the second chapter in a seasonal exhibition series which traces our arc through the year. Following our previous spring-themed show, this exhibition explores the many ways summer can be experienced — outwardly or inwardly, sensorially or in spirit. It presents the dazzling daze of summer, and welcomes all to come and play.
