introduction

Ryonosuke Fukui (1923-1986) was born in Nihonbashi, Tokyo. At the age of 15, his dream of becoming an artist led him to enroll in the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, majoring in metal casting. Initially he aspired to study Western painting, but chose to study metal casting at the recommendation of his family. His unique background in metal casting was later reflected in his paintings. His works have a unique meticulousness in background treatment and a refined, craftsmanship-like aesthetic.

Fukui's artworks reflect the hardships of wartime and postwar Japanese society. His pieces often feature monochromatic tones, sharp lines, and compositions imbued with unease. Fukui transformed his experiences of adversity into artistic expression, embedding his acute and profound emotions into his creations.

While Fukui initially gained recognition for his success in stencil printmaking, he shifted his focus to oil painting in the mid-1960s. During this period, his works were influenced by stencil techniques, gradually he developed a distinctive painting style of his own. For instance, in works such as Girl and Flowers, the delicate lines and intricately treated backgrounds combined to open new possibilities in oil painting.

Fukui's oil paintings are renowned for their unique expressiveness and poetic quality. Silence seems to be the theme his works whisper to their audience. His Maiko series not only captures the elegance of kimono but also conveys a cultural depth that transcends individual forms. In these pieces, the subjects are often depicted in profile or from behind, intertwining subtle emotions with a tranquil atmosphere that draws viewers into an enigmatic scene. Similarly, his winter landscapes, like frozen poems, depict serene and understated snowfields with meticulous brushwork, as if time has stopped, leaving an eternal chill.

Fukui's works achieve a delicate balance between colour and line. Through his masterful background treatments, his paintings exhibit both the precision of craftsmanship and the vitality of art. Whether portraying the graceful posture of a maiko or the serene stillness of a winter scene, each piece radiates deep emotion through its intricate details. The fusion of traditional and modern elements imbues his art with timeless appeal.

This exhibition highlights Fukui’s artistic evolution, showcasing a progression through a curated selection of works spanning his early to later periods.

Through these works, audiences get to see first hand his profound understanding of Japanese aesthetics and his relentless exploration of artistic form. We invite visitors to immerse in this visual journey spanning half a century, where his delicate brushstrokes and profound emotions uncover the quiet harmony between heaven and earth.
