Yokoyama Taikan (1868-1958) was born in the year of the collapse of the Edo Shogunate. In 1889, he entered the Tokyo Fine Arts School (Tokyo University of the Arts). Under the guidance of Okakura Kakuzō, he did not adhere strictly to the traditional expressions and techniques of Japanese painting but instead absorbed Western painting ideas, dedicating himself to the innovation of Japanese painting. After Okakura Kakuzō’s death, as one of the founding members of the Japan Art Institute, he led the Japanese painting world during the Meiji, Taishō, and Shōwa periods, becoming a true master who laid the foundation for modern Japanese painting. His life and work were closely intertwined with the rise and fall of Japanese society.
